Gatherings: Darkness as Practice

Darkness as Practice

by Sara Neall

One late fall evening a couple of years ago, I was suddenly inspired to get up and go for a walk through the darkness.

It felt so good. ‘I’ felt invisible to the world and invisible in the world. It was liberating.

This experience prompted me to organize a New Year’s Hike through the Kalyana Mitta Group Events, offered by RIM.

A few years ago, on New Year's Eve, a few of us gathered for an urban hike through the darkness. We walked together in silence for the first half of the hike and then opened into conversation.

It was allowing.

In the darkness, our words felt intimate and deep.

“The beauty of darkness is how it lets you see.” ~ Adrienne Rich
